One of Washington’s most outstanding arts organizations can be found right in the midst of downtown Everett.
You might, understandably, be a little thrown off by the name. It’s Schack Art Center, named for generous local benefactors John and Idamae Schack – not shack.
The nearly 20,000 square foot center has plenty to engage you; visitors can view, appreciate and even make art.
Entrance and self-guided gallery tours – often including the chance to see professional glass blowers at work in the hot shop – are admission-free for all ages. If you’d rather have a guide, call ahead to reserve; for a small fee. During the tour, you’ll learn more about the center’s history and the current exhibit, and get a behind-the-scenes look into some of the other studio spaces where artists might be printmaking, painting or firing ceramics in the kiln.

Want to try making some of your own glass art? Check out the Schack’s Make It Now! workshops to create your own glass apple, starfish, heart or seasonal items such as an ornament or pumpkin. (Reservations are required; finished work can be picked up after 48 hours.)
The retail shop is well worth a stop, with locally-made work from more than 170 artists. With jewelry, glass, ceramics, textiles, and more, you’ll find one-of-a-kind gifts on offer in all price ranges.

After all that, you’ve probably worked up an appetite; fortunately, you have plenty of dining options right in the neighborhood. Cafe Wylde is directly across the street, while The New Mexicans, Sol Food, and Capers + Olives are all within about 500 feet.
Staying the night? Hampton Inn or Courtyard are convenient if you plan to see the sights in Everett on foot; if you’re driving, consider Delta Hotels by Marriott, convenient to I-5 if you’re making other day trips, or the boutique waterfront Inn at Port Gardner.
