Weekend: Hygge Vibes in Seattle NorthCountry

Chilly rain just means there are more opportunities to get cozy in the true PNW.

It’s no surprise that we get cold rain here. It’s not a big deal for us locals, or for people who come with a sense of adventure and gung-ho can-do. But we get that it’s not for everyone.

When it rains, it pours — but you can always get hygge. Hygge is, of course, the Scandinavian idea of getting cozy when the days are short and dreary.

And it’s in this spirit that we present to you the following ideas to warm up your winter visit to the True PNW.

Sample seasonal spirits at Skip Rock Distillers.

Saunas and spas

Q Spa and Nails (for men and women)

3414 132nd St SE #306, Mill Creek, WA 98012

Mill Creek is a place where you can spend a chilly weekend day warming yourself at this spa. The spa is for men and women. They also offer a full nail service so that you walk away feeling sharp.

Mill Creek is also where you can get a hot meal at any of several restaurants and cafes in the Mill Creek Town Center. Or get a hot coffee, tea, or other handcrafted beverage at local favorite “The Spotted Cow.”

Olympus Spa (for women)

3815 196th St SW #160, Lynnwood, WA 98036

Located right next to the Lynnwood Convention Center, this spa is perfect for women. It offers dry saunas, steam saunas, whirlpools, and a room surrounded by rock crystals for healing.

Make a day of it. If you’re a music lover there’s the Silver Platters record store right across the parking lot. If you want to warm up with a bowl of soup Pho 36 is right across the street, serving up hot bowls of pho. Put some hot sauce in the soup and you’ll be warm all day, from the inside out.

Downtown Banya

2814 Colby Ave, Everett, WA 98201

This sauna and bath house is for men and women, and follows traditional Slavic bathing practices. They also serve food and have billiards table and offer Russian foods like trout, beer, and borscht.

Find a cozy read at Upper Case Books in Snohomish.

Comfort beverages and food

If you’re up north, Wander (1514 3rd St, Marysville, WA 98270) in Marysville is the place that all the hip kids are talking about. It’s got the coffee and pastries that are sure to please.

Proper Joe (1101 1st St, Snohomish, WA 98290) in Snohomish is right by the Snohomish River and several truly worthwhile dining establishments including Christa’s Sandwich Board, Roger’s Riverfront Bistro, and Todo Mexico.

If you’d like to warm up with a different kind of warming beverage, don’t miss Skip Rock Distillers (104 Ave C, Snohomish, WA 98290), located just up the street from Proper Joe. They’ll pour you samples of their seasonal wares in house and for a small fee.
