The 1940 Everett High School boys basketball team dominated the season like no other team in the state’s high school basketball history. They remained undefeated through the entire season with a record of 29-0 and outscored their opponents 1,216 to 582. They defeated Oakville in the state championship game 64-19. The team’s head coach was the legendary Jim Ennis.

The Seagulls set at least five season and state tournament records. Labeled as the “Wonder Team”, they were considered, at the time, as the finest team in high school team state history. The five starters all went on to play collegiately at Washington State College (WSU), Seattle University, University of Washington, and Central Washington State College (CWU). Merlin “Boody” Gilbertson, one of the starting five played one season professionally with the Sheboygan Redskins of the National Basketball League (a precursor to the NBA).
