After graduating from Western Washington University (WWU) in 1963 where he was also a four-year letter winner in baseball, Kim began a thirty-three year career in education. For sixteen years at Lynnwood High School and then Mountlake Terrace High, he was a math teacher and coach (football 13 years & baseball 16 years). He then served as an assistant principal and athletic director at Mountlake Terrace High for seven years before becoming the Edmonds School District Athletic Director during the last ten years of his career in education.

During his time with the Edmonds School District, Kim was very active with the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) as a board member for nine years including one year as WIAA Executive Board President. After his retirement, he continued to serve for ten years until 2006 as WIAA’s Northwest Interscholastic Activities Association Executive Secretary and Treasurer (now titled, District Director). He continues to serve Snohomish County sports as a member of the Snohomish County Sports Commission Board of Directors.

During the year he retired from Edmonds School District, he: 1) was selected as 1995-96 Washington Secondary School Athletic Administrators Association (WSSAAA) Athletic Director of the Year, 2) received WIAA’s Meritorious Service Award , and 3) received the Hal Moe Meritorious Award – Northwest District.

Kim’s other awards and honors include: 1) 1998, inducted into WSSAAA Hall of Fame, 2) 2000, inducted into Mountlake Terrace High School Athletic Hall of Fame, and selected for the WIAA Gareth Giles Memorial Award, 3) 2006, inducted into the WIAA Hall of Fame, and 4) 2009, selected for the John Wooden Coaches Wall of Honor.
